Here's a debate that is really kind of silly . . . but it seems to occupy a lot of bandwidth in genealogy and personal history circles.
In my view the key distinction is that there is no urgency about genealogy. Indeed, if you just delay your inquiry, the chances are good that someone else is doing the work and uncovering the facts. Personal history or life story preservation is different. If you don't act today to capture the story, there may not be a tomorrow.
